October 15 Scrimmage Invitation: Updated with Judge Instructions

Middle School Demonstration and Scrimmage

Saturday, October 15, 2016, 9:30 — 2:30

Bethel Middle School, 600 Whittlesey Drive, Bethel, CT

On behalf of Bethel Middle School and Cathy Emerick, coach, the Connecticut Middle School Debate League would like to invite you to this season’s first event, a demonstration debate, skill-building workshop and scrimmage.

Observers are welcome.  Debaters who will scrimmage should research the topic:

This House would not assign homework.

They must be prepared to uphold both sides of the motion.  Please refer to the CTMSDL Handbook for information on our format and rules.

Coaches should register their scrimmage debaters through tabroom.com.  Download our tabroom.com Instructions for more information.  On tabroom.com the event name is “CTMSDL Oct 15.”  There is no cap on the number of teams each school may enter.

Coaches should also register one judge per every 6 debaters who will scrimmage.  We’ll use Varsity High School debaters as judges first, but we need to have back-up judges.  Coaches should make sure their judges understand the information in the CTMSDL Handbook and the Judges Instructions.  We will also provide a judges’ workshop at the scrimmage.

The day’s schedule will be as follows:

Arrival & Registration  9:30 – 9:45
Demo Debate by Varsity High School Debaters  9:50 – 10:30
Workshops for Debaters, and Judges & Timers  10:45 – 11:45
Round 1  12:00 – 12:40
Lunch  12:45 – 1:15
Round 2  1:30 – 2:10
Debrief  2:15 – 2:30
Departure  2:30

Debaters may pack their lunches or buy tickets for pizza and drinks when they arrive.  Pizza will be $2 per slice and bottles of water and lemonade will be $1 each.  Thanks to the generosity of the CTMSDL’s sponsor, The English Speaking Union, Greenwich Branch, lunch will be provided for judges.

You may download a pdf version of the October Scrimmage Invitation for printing.
