October 27 Scrimmage Invitation
Smith Middle School, Glastonbury, and the Connecticut Middle School Debate League invite you to our first event of the 2018-19 season, a scrimmage on Saturday, October 27, 2018.
Our topic will be:
This House would include E-sports in the Olympic Games.
Debaters should research this topic and prepare proposition and opposition cases prior to the event.
We have a number of useful items you can download:
- The full Scrimmage Invitation
- Notes and Sample Cases on the topic courtesy of Eliza Posner
- Updated Judge’s Instructions complete with a rubric
- CTMSDL Dues Form for 2018-19
- CTMSDL Handbook updated for 2018-19
In order to effectively prepare, PLEASE EMAIL US ASAP to let us know if you plan to attend, even if you don’t know how many teams you will be bringing.
In order to accommodate different skill levels, we have two divisions for the scrimmage:
- NEW NOVICE for those who have not debated before, and
- NOVICE for those with some experience.
These categories are explained in more detail in the invitation. Please register your debaters accordingly.
PLEASE recruit and register judges. These may include high school varsity debaters, parents, and teachers. We try to recruit judges directly from the high school debate league, but in case we can’t recruit enough, we’ll use the volunteers you bring.
PLEASE make sure your judges read the attached Judges’ Instructions thoroughly before scrimmage day. We do spend some time providing last minute instructions, but it helps if new judges have had a chance to review this material before hand.
PLEASE recruit volunteer timers as well. Timers don’t need to be registered, but they are a great aid to judges and debaters.
PLEASE review all of the rule changes effective this year that are included in our updated Handbook.
We are looking forward to seeing you all on October 27!
