April 21 Tournament Invitation

On behalf of Eastern Middle School and coach Bruce johnson, the Connecticut Middle School Debate League invites you to our third tournament of the season:

  • Saturday, April 21, 2018, 9:30 am — 3:45 pm
  • Eastern Middle School, 51 Hendrie Avenue, Riverside, CT 06878
  • Sponsored by the English Speaking Union, Greenwich Branch

Below you will find information or the topic, registration, judges, timers, the schedule for the day, lunch and useful documents available for download.

Topic

Debaters who will compete should research the topic:

This House believes that Artificial Intelligence will do more good than harm.

They will debate on both sides of the motion.

Registration

Coaches should register their debaters  and judges through tabroom.com, where the tournament name is “CTMSDL Apr 21.” There is no cap on the number of teams each school may enter.  Observers are welcome.

Judges

Coaches should register one judge per every two teams. Schools only bringing one team should register one judge. We’ll use Varsity High School debaters as judges first, but we need to have back-up judges for things to run smoothly.  Coaches should make sure their judges understand the information in the CTMSDL Handbook and our Judges’ Instructions. We will hold a judges’ workshop at the tournament, but these sessions are better if the judges have a basic understanding of our debate format before they arrive.

Timers

Coaches are also encouraged to bring volunteer timers.  Note parents may act as timers in debate rounds.  If you have parents coming to watch their children debate, they can keep time for the round while they watch.
